Abstract:
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represent a significant global health burden. Poor medication adherence and incorrect inhaler technique are pervasive and associated with an increased risk of disease exacerbation. The development of digital inhalers has the potential to change the management of asthma and COPD. Digihaler is a digital multi-dose dry powder inhaler with an integrated electronic module that can directly address the challenges of adherence and technique by providing practical and personalized information about inhalation characteristics, inhaler technique, and adherence. Objective data from Digihaler may support evidence-based clinical decision making in routine practice and has the potential to be utilized in the development of predictive models of impending asthma and COPD exacerbations.
