Abstract:
This paper will highlight the usefulness of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a method for measuring the impact of nasally administered drugs to the central nervous system. Nose to brain delivery is an appealing avenue for centrally acting ligand development as this pathway permits the transport of active ingredients directly to the brain and bypasses the blood brain barrier. This work presents data from a fMRI study that was conducted to evaluate the effects of intranasal administration of insulin on brain perfusion and functional connectivity. Presenting these data will hopefully highlight how fMRI methodologies may aid in assessing and evaluating nose to brain delivery of pharmaceuticals, particularly insulin.
