Abstract:
Acoustic methods which assess inhaler technique have shown promising potential to provide healthcare professionals and patients with valuable information regarding inhaler use. These acoustic methods offer a new form of connectivity without the need for embedded sensors within inhaler devices. As inhaler acoustic algorithms continue to develop, there is a growing demand for these approaches to be introduced to other smart platforms such as smartphone applications. In this article, we discuss how the acoustic signature of inhalers can be used to assess adherence and inhaler technique, as well as highlighting the challenges ahead in terms of validating such approaches.
