Abstract:
Digital monitoring and interventions offer a new direction for chronic disease management standard of care in respiratory therapy. Non-adherence to preventative medication is a recognized problem and the major cause of poorly controlled asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The SmartinhalerTM platform comprises a connected sensor device, which fits discretely onto the inhaler, apps that connect to the device and monitor medication adherence, usage, and provide patient reminders, and cloud-based software for analysis of patient and medication usage data by caregivers. Smartinhaler has been shown to increase adherence to controller medications leading to fewer exacerbations. Through remote access to real-time objective data, clinicians gain visibility into the patient’s usage of medications and can ensure individual treatment is tailored effectively. This improves patient engagement and treatment effectiveness, which, in turn, can improve outcomes.
