Abstract:
Human factors engineering has become an important aspect of inhaler device development, and recently there has been increased emphasis on ensuring that drug delivery systems are designed such that they are safe and effective when used correctly in the hands of patients. The consideration of usability during the design and development of a dose counter for metered dose inhalers is critical to ensure patient confidence and satisfaction, but is also associated with manufacturing difficulties and costs. For both dose counters and dose indicators, wherever they are located within the device, a balance must be achieved to ensure that human factors and robust manufacturing requirements are considered and met throughout each stage of the design process.
