Inhaler Development in Developing Markets: Overcoming Barriers to Implementation

Howlett DJ.

Respiratory Drug Delivery 2010. Volume 1, 2010: 131-138.

Abstract:

Inhalers, in particular pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDI) are complex dosage forms that offer technical challenges during development. The demand for such products in developing markets is both substantial and demonstrating significant annual growth. pMDI transition from CFC propellants has failed to occur in these markets within the originally mandated timeframe (by 2010). There are many barriers to implementation and each company’s situation may be unique. However the themes which conspire to delay CFC phase out and enable pMDI transition in these countries are often similar.
